Understanding Relationship Patterns – A Guide for Self-Reflection and Therapy

This test is based on Lester Luborsky’s Core Conflictual Relationship Theme (CCRT). In close relationships, a recurring pattern often emerges involving what we wish for, how we experience the other person’s response, and how we ourselves respond in turn. For German-speaking contexts, the concept was reformulated by Cornelia Albani and colleagues (CCRT-LU). It was first implemented as a questionnaire by Jacques Barber (CRQ-R), which serves as the methodological model for this test.

Compared with the original approach, this test has been further developed in three ways: The categories are derived from established theories—Liotti’s motivational systems and Brown and Elliott’s five attachment-promoting functions—rather than being grouped purely statistically. The conflict itself is measured: your core theme is not your strongest wish, but the wish that is most strongly frustrated. And, optionally, the test examines a second relationship to assess whether your pattern is specific to one relationship or functions as a script that accompanies you across multiple relationships.

As a self-report measure, the test captures your conscious experience. No questionnaire can fully assess deeper, implicit processes—the same limitation applies to attachment questionnaires such as the ECR compared with the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI). The test is intended for self-exploration and does not replace professional assessment or psychotherapy. Most importantly, relationship scripts are learned—and therefore can change.
